Thomas Meriwether arranged for the passage of a Ralph Shelton to the Virginia Colony before October 10 of 1702, where he lived near the Dragon Swamp on the border of Middlesex and Essex Counties. DNA testing has established that Mark Shelton is a descendant of that Ralph Shelton and the successive generations of Mark’s English ancestors moved south and west through Virginia, south into North Carolina, west into Tennessee, north into Kentucky and west into Missouri before Mr. Shelton was born in Iowa nine generations after Ralph.

The members of this Shelton family were patriotic farmers and educators who fought in the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Korean War. One member of this family still owns and operates the Shelton and Sons northern Missouri cattle farm which Mr. Shelton’s third-great grandfather obtained by land grant in 1854.

Mark’s great-great grandfather survived a gun shot wound to the neck suffered during Civil War fighting in the Hornet’s Nest at Shiloh-Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, a gun shot wound to the shoulder suffered shortly thereafter during fighting in Corinth, Mississippi and, after being captured during Sherman’s March to the Sea, having been incarcerated in the infamous Libby Prison of Richmond, Virginia. At that same time, Mrs. Shelton’s great-great grandfather owned land near what is now the Richmond International Airport on which there was a Civil War skirmish and which thereafter served as a cemetery for Confederate soldiers.

Mark has earned the highest possible rating (AV Preeminent) in both legal ability and ethical standards from Martindale-Hubbell and Lexis-Nexis, has been designated as a Tampa Bay Top Rated Lawyer and is listed as a highly regarded expert in the Alternate Dispute Resolution section of the Law and Leading Attorneys Florida Consumer Guidebook. Since 1989 Mark Shelton has served as a Mediator, Arbitrator or Umpire in some 7,000 matters.

After returning to Florida in 1980, Mark practiced law in Tampa until 1989 when he opened his office in the northern suburb of Lutz where that office remains. Mark and his wife reside in the New Tampa area where much of their leisure time has been devoted to their son’s competitive soccer activities. Mrs. Shelton serves as the Business Director for a large regional youth soccer club with operations and fields in three Tampa Bay area counties and their son is a Division I collegiate student-athlete in North Carolina.

Mark is proud to have received a Scholar-Athlete Award from the Tampa Chapter of the National Football Foundation and to have later served as its President. He is equally proud to have received the Bill Wade Unsung Hero Award from the All-American Football Foundation for outstanding performance in his profession. Mr. Shelton is also pleased to have given back to the community by having served as the President of Habitat for Humanity of Central Pasco County, a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, by having served as the President of the Black Watch Soccer Club and by having served as a Vice-President and the Secretary of the Fusion Futbol Club of Tampa Bay.

“The obligation of our profession is… to serve as healers of human conflicts.”
